Boat Trips
Excursions by boat along the shores of the island show the Lou people (the third largest tribe in Kenya) in their colourful and beautifully painted boats fishing along the shores and laying their night's catch out to dry in the sun. Giant monitor lizards and spotted necked Otter can often be seen in family groups in the rock around the island.
Bird Trips
The island is a Mecca for Bird watchers, with over 100 species recorded on and around the Rusinga. Many nest in the gardens of the Club including a pair of fish eagles and the exotic double-toothed barbet.
It is possible to troll for Nile perch along the shore and to cast forTilapia either from the boat or the shore. Both fish make delicious eating and our expert chef will be happy to cook your catch for you. The Club currently hold the all tackle record, at 191lb, for the heaviest Nile perch, as well as several other 'line class' records and catches of over 100lb are not uncommon.
Water Sports
Modern equipment, including lifejackets for all age groups, is available for water-skiing. Also there is a seven-man banana and double single watermelon for the young at heart. For sailing, there are two modern wind-surfers or a traditional dhow
Fossil Walks
A short walk from the lodge brings you to the site where Mary Leakey discovered Proconsul heseloni in 1948, one of mans earliest ancestors. Other walks allow exploration of the surrounding hill or the shoreline.
